Mel
Cervical cancer, aged 31
Mel was only 31 when diagnosed with cervical cancer. She underwent a Radical trachelectomy with pelvic lymph node removal. She recalls a feeling of ‘toxicity in my body’ with regards to the cancer and the ‘need to get my house in order’ when it came to the treatment. Despite the challenges that Mel faced through the journey, she describes a sense of relief after the aggressive treatment. Mel exudes positivity about her experience providing her a second chance at life. So much so, that it completely changed her life path, and she is now completing her phD in gynaecological cancer. She also has a great support group, and is working on a some pretty amazing holistic care opportunities to help support women who are fighting gynaecological cancer. Check out her website - Girls Rocking Cancer.
Despite all odds, Mel was also able to fall pregnant and have a baby after her treatment. She talks about her scars from her caesarian being more challenging to accept than the scars received (in the very same location) from the cancer treatment. Mel fondly recalls being raised by a ‘strong mama’ who provided her with unconditional love, which instilled in her a strong sense of connection and love with her own body. However, Mel openly shares the feelings she had, that connection with body, being threatened after having the cancer treatment, compounded by pregnancy and subsequent caesarean surgery. Mel’s practical attitude helped her find meaning to her scars as ‘victory’, and celebrates her body for carrying her through the trauma. “We are more than just a body, more than our scars. Being in touch with our body is an important part of connecting with who we are”.
